Saturn – Holst

Saturn, from Gustav Holst’s Planet Suite, being played by The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras.

A huge influence on John Williams for his Star Wars music. (and many other pieces of sci-fi movie music) Holst’s Planet Suite has everything the subject demands – it’s huge, epic, bombastic, mysterious and at times unnerving.. as it ought to be.

I love the Saturn piece especially because it’s so strange and melancholic – I must’ve posted this before but one day, far from now someone will look down on Saturn from orbit and be listening to this piece of Music as I’m sure Holst imagined when he wrote it – I wish it could be me..
